I considered shaping the book around themes, but I felt
that this would make it academic. I have instead allowed my
family members to speak for themselves. I have, however,
looked at themes in the last chapter, drawing together our
individual experiences and normalising them. Such
normalisation of grief is important and helps healing. I
decided to tell our story in as much detail as possible, using
the three diaries kept by Mary, Breda, and myself, as well as
written recollections from my family.
