workplace bullying is very destructive and causes years of distress

The consequences of workplace bullying are horrific. In the course of my counselling work, I am always disturbed at the acute stress and demoralisation workplace victims endure. They suffer physically, mentally and financially. Their behaviour changes as they sink into anxiety and depression. As in Anna’s case, the bullies image and voice is constantly in the victim’s mind, so that many find it difficult to sleep, relax or work. Monday mornings are a nightmare for them. They alternate between anger and helplessness. They feel isolated, shamed, and guilty as they struggle to survive in a toxic and exhausting workplace. Some abuse drugs and drink to avoid the pain and hurt they feel. Victims of long term bullying manifest symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, panic attacks, and suicidal thoughts.
Victims of workplace abuse also experience many physical and psychosomatic complaints, including skin problems, heart palpitations, migraine, dizziness, headaches, and gastric complaints. Their immune system is adversely affected. Some get blood pressure. They lose concentration, suffer accidents, and become difficult to live with as their focus is entirely shifted from family life to work. The victim’s partner has to deal with his/her mood swings, as well as suffering the economic consequences of bullying. When victims take time off work, they must rely on social welfare payments. Sometimes they simply resign to escape the torment.
As the bullying and controlling intensifies, the victims’ self-confidence diminishes. They lose perspective and doubt their ability to do their work. They undervalue their opinions and ideas, and, more importantly, their worth, as they are isolated and undermined. They experience loss of control, helplessness and fear as they bend to another’s will. Victims may withdraw from society and even from their families.
